The Burren Hostel is situated in the village of Lisdoonvarna on the verge of the Atlantic between the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Lisdoonvarna is well known for the matchmaking festival which takes place every September (before Covid). The hostel is ideal for groups wishing to visit the Burren and Doolin, where you can take a ferry to the Aran Islands or the beautiful Cliffs of Moher. It is a central place which is close to public transport stops (walking distance to the square in Lisdoonvarna). Open from mid March to mid October, the hostel is a comfortable accommodation space which is run in a very eco-friendly way.
Working Together
We collaborate with all stakeholders to collectively develop the Geopark as a sustainable tourism destination. We are members of the Burren Ecotourism Network and also collaborate with the Burren Smokehouse, Wild Honey Inn as well as the other businesses in Lisdoonvarna by referring our guests to them in the information area and through our staff engagement.
A cared-for landscape
We actively participate in conserving our natural and cultural heritage. We make an effort to keep Lisdoonvarna tidy and actively promote the principles of Leave no Trace to our guests.
A well-understood heritage
We offer quality information and interpretation to communicate our stories and the unique character of our place to guests. There is an extensive tourist information area in our reception and all front office staff are well briefed on the natural and geological attractions in the area, using the Geopark Map. We also liaise with Lisdoonvarna Failte who provide extensive history of Lisdoonvarna down at the Spa Wells, where there is an excellent historical display with high resolution photographs of Lisdoonvarna from the 1870’s onwards.
Vibrant Communities
We work to ensure that tourism makes a positive social contribution so that it benefits our community as well as our guests.
Strengthened Livelihoods
We contribute to the local economy by maintaining and supporting local employment, by sourcing services and produce locally wherever possible, and by engaging with other businesses in promoting our region as a sustainable tourism destination.
Sustainable tourism management
We work to an Environmental Action Plan, which includes actions and targets for improvement that are reviewed annually. We have effective systems for monitoring and adequately managing our waste, water, wastewater, energy, travel impact and purchases. The Burren Hostel is complete with:
Waste Segregation area – to encourage guest to bring any waste material back from their days touring in the Burren, with clear signage for recycling etc.
