Leenane Mountain Walking Festival

This is a festival with something for all levels of walkers -

  • Guided walks up Mweelrea Mountain (the highest in Connacht!), Leenane Mountain, Devil's Mother & Ben Gorm led by Michael Gibbons, the well-known archaeologist, and gerry Greensmyth.
  • Low-level guided walks along the Famine Tracks and the Western Way.
  • Self-guided short walks for the family
  • Programme of talks and music
  • Code of conduct and public insurance for all walkers
  • Special Activity deals at Delphi & Killary Adventure Centre for the weekend
  • No problem on any of the guided walks with access

All guided walks will be led by qualified and experienced guides, aided by locals with vast knowledge and informationLeenane on the area. Transport to and from starting and finishing points will be provided. Festival organisers gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the local landowners, without whom this festival would not be possible, and the local people who will be accompanying the groups onto the hills.No dogs allowed.

Registration opens at 08.00 on Saturday morning, 1st May, at the Sheep & Wool Centre in Leenane.

Friday 30th April

7.30pm Talk by Michael Gibbons on Leenane & its history in the Carraig Bar, Leenane

 

Saturday 1st May

Walk A: Strenuous high level Walk B&C: Medium High level Walk D: Low Level

Registration opens at 8.00am @ Sheep & Wool Centre in Leenane

9am Depart for Twelve Bens – Ben Baun Walk

Depart for Mweelrea Walk

10am Glencroft Horseshoe C (Michael Gibbons) The hike and archaeological field trip walk will include a Lime Kiln, mass rock, holy well & and children’s graveyard amongst others

10.30am Kylemore/Leenane Western Way Walk low level & gentler walking!

4 - 5pm Finish walks and arrive down to Tea/Coffee/ Scones in Local Businesses

 

Finish of Yacht race from Westport to Killary. Watch the magnificent sight of the yachts racing up Killary Harbour

Dinner & enjoy the welcome of Leenane. All Musicians welcome.

 

Sunday 2nd May

Registration opens at 8.00am @ Sheep & Wool Centre in Leenane

9am Depart for Mweelrea Walk A

10am Depart for Ben Baun Walk C

1030am Ashleigh Falls to Doughlough valley – Western Way D

Climbing Wall in Village, Sean-nois dancing during the afternoon

Killary Cruises ½ price daily tickets all weekend.

4 - 5pm Finish walks and arrive down to Tea/Coffee/ Scones etc

7.30pm BBQ & Ceile in Leenane hotel for all – villagers & walkers alike. Dance the night away!

 

Cost of Weekend:

€35 for 1 day or €60 for 2 Days to include qualified guides (plus Local guides from the area), transport (including Mweelrea speedboat trip) to and from each walk, Tee shirt, Maps, teas/coffees etc. Price does NOT include accommodation or packed lunches.

BBQ Sunday night €15 – Ceili in aid of the Leenane Red Cross €5 entry donation

Participants must come well prepared with suitable footwear & waterproofs.
